    Animation Art Glossary

ENHANCED LITHOGRAPHS have a unique feeling of depth through the emphasis of certain colors. After one color separation is made, specially selected colors are reseparated and enhanced so that it appears the character is "popping" off the background.

    GICLEE
(pronounced ‘jee-clay’) is a process that produces a fine-art print directly from a digital animation file. After the original illustration is scanned into a computer, artists skillfully perfect the color. The digitally recreated artwork is printed onto museum-quality, acid-free paper with an enhanced printer, specially modified for fine art reproduction.

HAND-PAINTED LIMITED-EDITION CELS are either hand-inked or the lines are xerographically applied. A pencil outline of the characters is carefully inked onto the acetate cel or transferred by a six-step xerographic process. Hand-mixed colors are matched to the original artwork and hand-painted onto the cel. The cel is then placed on a lithographic reproduction of the original animation background. These specially-created masterpieces typically have edition sizes of 500 or less.

    HAND-PULLED LITHOGRAPHY
involves creating color separations to capture every nuance of the original painting’s hue. Each color is hand inked onto a specially prepared aluminum plate. Museum-quality paper is placed by hand through the press -- once for each color -- transferring the custom-made color plate to the paper.

    ORIGINAL PRODUCTION CELS
differ from Limited Edition Cels in that they are one-of–a-kind cels that were actually photographed in the production of a Walt Disney Television Animation series or Feature Film. They are all hand-inked and hand-painted and matched with a reproduction of the original animation background.

    SERICELS
are created through a very precise fine art screen-printing process known as serigraphy. An artist cuts a stencil for every color in the image. A sericel may contain as many as 35 different colors, each individually screen-printed onto an acetate cel. Their edition sizes typically run from 2,500 to 5,000. They may or may not be matched with a lithograph background.

    SERIGRAPHS
are made from separate hand-cut stencils for each color of the original illustration. The stencil is transferred to a mesh screen -- one for each color – and the paper is hand-fed through the press as many times as there are colors, creating a richly textured final print.
